OFFICE FOR SEARCH FOR MISSING PERSONS OPENS IN VUKOVAR

VUKOVAR VUKOVAR, Oct 15 (Hina) - A working group office for tracing persons who went missing in the Osijek-Baranja and Vukovar-Srijem counties during the Homeland Defence War was opened in Vukovar on Monday. The office will function under the government's Office for Missing and Imprisoned Persons. The head of the government's Office, Ivan Grujic, recalled that in 1991 more than 18,000 people were listed as missing. Since then 7,500 have been released from prisons and concentration camps held by Serbs in Yugoslavia and Bosnia-Herzegovina, as well as in formerly occupied Croatian areas. Out of the 128 uncovered mass and individual graves found so far, 3,260 persons listed as missing have been exhumed, of which 82 percent have been identified, Grujic stressed. He added the percentage of those identified was increasing, partially thanks to the support of the international community. Croatia still has a list of 1,423 people

Sixty-three mass graves have been discovered in the eastern Croatian Danube River region, out of which 2,705 people have been exhumed. Another 779 persons are still being sought for. The Vukovar-based office for tracing the missing should help with the operative task of gathering information about missing persons and the discovery of mass graves in the Danubian area, Grujic said.
