PAKRACKA POLJANA CASE BACK IN COURT

ZAGREB, Oct 9 (Hina) - The date when the trial in the Pakracka poljana (Pakrac Field) case will restart has not been set yet as one of the five accused is still at large, the president of the Zagreb County Court's crime department, Drazen Tripalo, said on Tuesday. The president of the panel of judges, Rajka Tomerlin Almer, who is presiding the case, has suggested prosecuting one indictee in absentia. The decision is up to the Zagreb County State Prosecutor's Office. The Pakracka poljana case came to light in 1992, after an investigation into the murder of the Zagreb family Zec led police to alleged crimes committed by members of a reserve Interior Ministry unit, which at the onset of the Homeland War was commanded by Tomislav Mercep. The case "rested" until December of 1997, when an indictment was filed after Miroslav Bajramovic, one of the accused, spoke in Feral Tribune weekly about the alleged crimes the Mercep gang (Mercepovci) committed in the Pakrac area in Western Slavonia. The indictment originally charged eight persons, but the case of Kresimir Prosinecki and Zvonimir Zakosek was separated due to health reasons. Six members of the Mercep gang were charged with ten crimes, including the murder of Aleksandar Antic in late 1991, attempted murders, illegal arrests, harassment and extortion. (hina) ha sb
