DUBROVNIK, Oct 8 (Hina) - In the international atmosphere which has
been caused by the September 11 terrorist attacks on New York and
Washington one must not neglect the protection and promotion of
human rights, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Mary Robinson
said in Dubrovnik on Monday. #L#
Robinson made the statement at the International conference on
human rights and democratisation in European countries, Central
Asia and Transcaucasia, which is being held in Dubrovnik's hotel
Excelsior on October 8-10.
Somebody could say that in the prevailing climate in the world after
the terrorist attacks on the United States, human rights should be
pushed back, but one must do exactly the opposite and think all the
time about the connection between human safety, human rights and
democracy, Robinson said.
The three-day conference, organised at the suggestion of the
Croatian government, in cooperation with the Office of the High UN
Commissioner for Human Rights and the European Commission, should
focus on general trends in the protection and promotion of human
rights in European countries, Central Asia and Transcaucasia as
well as set UN priorities in the protection of human rights.
In his address to the meeting, Croatian Foreign Minister Tonino
Picula said "a global, systematic and permanent international
fight against terrorism has started" after September 11.
Croatia will continue contributing to the anti-terrorist coalition
as much as it can, he said, adding this fight was not a conflict of
civilisations.
Attending the conference are representatives of government and
non-government organisations from 45 European countries and eight
former Soviet republics from Central Asia and Transcaucasia.
