ZAGREB, Sept 27 (Hina) - The Croatian parliament on Thursday
afternoon continued a discussion on a bill on the rights of Homeland
War veterans and their families, which was supported by members of
the ruling coalition. The opposition was against it, stressing its
adoption was proposed exclusively due to budget savings.
Representatives of the ruling coalition said on several occasions
they did not want to pass a law which was impossible to implement. In
their opinion, this is the case with the current law.
Representatives of all parliamentary parties agreed the bill
needed to be improved by taking the remarks of veterans'
associations into consideration. They also agreed about the need to
implement a quality revision of all rights acquired in the 1991-5
Homeland War, but also in the 1941-5 national liberation struggle,
as well as labour rights.
The MPs welcomed the fact that the rights of persons suffering from
post-traumatic stress and disabled war veterans were equated. Also
supported was a proposal submitted by Pavle Katalinic of the Social
Democratic Party (SDP) under which the notion of "Homeland War
volunteer" would be included in the law, as a moral satisfaction to
those who were the first to join the defence of the Homeland from
Serbian aggression.
