ZAGREB, Sept 19 (Hina) - Viribus Unitis, a homeland pride and honour society, and HONOS, an association for the protection of the values of the Homeland War, convened a news conference on Wednesday to call for compliance with
parliamentary conclusions on the 1990s war. If prominent Homeland War figures continue to be persecuted and discriminated against, the two associations will seek protection at a general assembly of the Croatian people, which they say gave them confidence in the hardest times of the creation of the Croatian state. ZAGREB, Sept 19 (Hina) - Viribus Unitis, a homeland pride and honour
society, and HONOS, an association for the protection of the values
of the Homeland War, convened a news conference on Wednesday to call
for compliance with parliamentary conclusions on the 1990s war.
If prominent Homeland War figures continue to be persecuted and
discriminated against, the two associations will seek protection
at a general assembly of the Croatian people, which they say gave
them confidence in the hardest times of the creation of the Croatian
state.
"This announcement shouldn't be understood as a threat, but as a
warning to incumbent authorities," said Janko Bobetko, a retired
general.
Today's press conference was called in the wake of recent break-ins
into and searches of the flats of generals Ivan Korade and Miljenko
Filipovic and brigadier Ante Filipovic, and the wire-tapping and
other forms of pressure by the incumbent authorities, said HONOS
president Nenad Ivankovic.
He urged competent bodies to say who was being tapped, and on what
basis, stressing around 25 people very active in protecting the
dignity of the Homeland War and members of the opposition were being
tapped.
Gen. Bobetko objected to the revision of historical facts, saying
he was not for the creation of myths, but would neither allow the
Homeland War, Croatia's war of independence from the ex-
Yugoslavia, to be criminalised.
Asked about recent arrests of war veterans in the Sibenik and
Virovitica areas, HONOS president Ivankovic said only the
judiciary could decide if a suspect was guilty and that nobody was
against prosecuting those responsible for specific crimes.
According to Ivankovic, the Hague war crimes tribunal's
indictments against generals Ante Gotovina and Rahim Ademi are
fabricated.
