DUBROVNIK, Sept 1 (Hina) - Croatia's First Deputy Prime Minister
Goran Granic opened a forum of health ministers from the countries
which signed the Stability Pact in Dubrovnik on Saturday.
The Croatian government is responsible for the improvement of the
health sector and this process requires human and financial
resources, Granic said. Sharing experience with other south-east
European countries and in line with recommendations from the World
Bank and the Council of Europe, Croatia can improve its health
sector, Granic told the forum, which was organised by the Croatian
Health Ministry, the World Health Organisation (WHO) and the
Council of Europe.
Health Minister Ana Stavljenic Rukavina said the purpose of the
meeting was to support the development and improvement of health
service in the region as well as the improvement of the right to
health care.
The Council of Europe's director-general for social cohesion,
Gabriella Battaini, said the forum would trigger a process of
social cooperation within the Stability Pact, which would continue
in other sectors as well.
The two-day forum will focus on topics related to health and
regional cooperation. Representatives from Croatia, Bosnia,
Yugoslavia, Macedonia, Bulgaria, Romania and Albania will propose
a set of projects, to be presented in the autumn, at the next meeting
of the Stability Pact countries. The decision on which projects
will be financed should be adopted by the end of October.
Croatia's project, worth about five million US dollars, focuses on
the provision of institutional and personnel potential for the
development of a quality public health system. If the project
receives financial backing, Croatia could become the co-ordinator
of the education of the entire region and organise post-graduate
studies and public health schools in south-east European
countries.
At the end of the forum the ministers are expected to sign a document
entitled the "Dubrovnik Pledge", as an expression of political
agreement to cooperation in the region.
