Two Croatians to join Operation Unified Protector

ZAGREB, May 25 (Hina) - The Croatian parliamentary defence committee on Wednesday okayed a motion made by the Defence Ministry to dispatch two Croatian Armed Forces members to the "Unified Protector" peace operation.

Operation Unified Protector is a NATO-led naval and air operation to enforce the arms embargo and the no-fly zone against Libya in support of United Nations Security Council Resolutions 1970 and 1973 during the 2011 Libyan civil war.

The two Croatian officers will be deployed in the naval segment of the operation, headquartered in a base near the Italian city of Bologna.

According to Defence Ministry state secretary Pjer Simunovic, the two Croatians will contribute to the planning and co-ordination of the operation in Italy.

Also today, the committee endorsed the ministry's proposals on the participation of Croatian Armed Forces members in NATO-led peace missions and operations when it comes to transfers.

According to Simunovic, austerity measures have led to a trend of reduction of the number of officers and noncommissioned officers in NATO's command structure, which is why the existing ones must be transferrable. They must have national licences for their dispatching to positions where their command structures are transferred.
