Wednesday night in Damadzici village in eastern Bosnia, after
unidentified attackers started a gun fire on a house with Bosniak
(Muslim) returnees, local police and the United Nations High
Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) confirmed in Sarajevo on
Thursday.
Udo Janz, deputy head of UNHCR's Mission to Bosnia-Herzegovina,
said this was the second attack on refugees in Damadzici in the past
three months. This tragedy would not have happened had the local
authorities taken appropriate measures after the first attack, he
said. One Bosniak returnee was attacked on May 14, but the culprits
were never identified or punished.
The village is in Vlasenica municipality, which is the Bosnian Serb
entity.
As in other parts of eastern Bosnia, the Bosniak population from
this municipality has been completely displaced at the beginning of
the 1990s war, and returns are slow and full of obstacles.
In the daytime, the Bosniaks come to clear up the remains of their
houses, but only few stay in the half-repaired buildings during the
night.
