ZAGREB, July 11 (Hina) - An association of disabled war veterans
(HVIDR-a), the headquarters for the protection of dignity of the
Homeland War and a society for the protection of the Homeland War's
values, called 'HONOS', firmly oppose Croatian officers' transfer
to the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia
(ICTY).
These three associations, however, agree that for the time being
they are not going to block roads in protest over the Ivica Racan
cabinet's decision to comply with the ICTY's request about the
extradition of two suspects whose names are cited in the two sealed
indictments recently served by the Tribunal to Zagreb.
Although the indictments are sealed, the public and media speculate
that the two indictees are generals Ante Gotovina and Rahim Ademi.
"Nobody, except Ivica Racan, knows the names of the suspects," the
HVIDR-a leader, Marinko Liovic, said at e news conference on
Wednesday, adding that HVIDR-a members "are ready to protect
Croatian veterans, potential ICTY suspects, by all means,
including physical protection."
Liovic said he was communicating with General Gotovina via the
above-mentioned headquarters and was expecting to see him at e
ceremony of promotion of a book about him, set for Saturday in
Zagreb.
Liovic called on the other possible indictee, General Ademi, not to
surrender voluntarily if it is proved to be true that he is in the
sealed indictment.
Liovic urged him to think twice and not turn himself in to the ICTY,
reminding him of the destiny of several Bosnian Croats, who, Liovic
said, have been languishing in the Hague prison for years. Those
indictees were transferred to The Hague during the then HDZ
government.
In this context, Liovic severely criticised the incumbent
authorities labelling them as fraudulent.
"(Premier) Ivica Racan and President Stipe Mesic will answer before
the Croatian people for all what they have done as well as for
devaluing all that is national and for equating the victim and the
aggressor," Liovic said.
HVIDR-a representatives insist on being present on Sunday's
parliamentary session when the Sabor should cast a vote of
confidence in the current government.
