PERSSON: CANDIDATES SHOULD BE GIVEN CLEAR SIGNAL THAT EU ENLARGEMENT WILL CONTINUE

GOETEBORG, June 15 (Hina) - Leaders of the European Union countries have reached a consensus that countries which are candidates for EU membership should be given a clear signal that the process of EU enlargement will continue, Goeran Persson, the Prime Minister of Sweden, the country hosting an EU summit in Goeteborg, told a news conference on Friday. EU leaders will be joined by the heads of state or government of 12 EU candidate countries on Saturday afternoon. As the country chairing the EU, Sweden has been advocating the setting of a concrete deadline for the completion of talks on full EU membership, however, there has been no indication that the European Council has reached a consensus on this issue. France's Minister of European Affairs, Pierre Moscovici, said setting a firm deadline would be unproductive at the moment.(hina) rml
