RACAN SAYS LOCAL ELECTIONS HAVE STRENGTHENED GOVERNMENT

ZAGREB, May 24 (Hina) - Croatian Prime Minister Ivica Racan said the government would do its work more easily when parties of the ruling coalition take over control over local governments from the HDZ (Croatian Democratic Union). The government is a winner in this situation because we will have a local government which will cooperate and not obstruct the implementation of out strategy and policy, Racan told Reuters. He said he needs a stable government to complete the reforms of economy, law institutions and the political system. Croatia's economy should be apparent to the common person by the end of the year, he said. Racan's ruling coalition won over the HDZ in two thirds of 21 Croatian counties, but did not manage to achieve a landslide victory which would enable any of the six parties in the coalition to form local governments, Reuters recalls.(hina) lml sb
