ZAGREB, May 18 (Hina) - Two Croatian Post (HP) unions which
organised a day-long strike on Friday claim 73.6 percent of all HP
employees took part in the strike by 15.00 hours.
The unions maintain the HP management resorted to various forms of
pressure in an attempt to dissuade the employees from going on
strike, undermining their constitutional right to strike.
One female employee in the southern Adriatic town of Sibenik, for
instance, was transferred to another job for participating in the
strike, the unionists say.
The strike was organised by the Republic Union of Croatian Post and
Telecommunications Employees and the Croatian Post Union, which
claim the HP management damaged employees by 180 million kuna
(approx. $21.7 million) by failing to act in line with the work
agreement. The employer was obliged to increase salaries in line
with the growing costs of living, thus amassing the debt.
The unions also seek the resumption of negotiations on a new work
agreement and better protection for HP property and employees.
During Thursday's failed attempt at conciliation, the unions
accepted a Conciliation Council proposal to be given back only 76
million kuna ($9.2 million), giving up claims from 1999. The HP
management, however, said no to the proposal, claiming the debt
amounted only to 13 million ($1.6 million).
The HP management said it would take a position on the strike on
Monday.
