CHAIN OF SMUGGLERS OF HUMAN BEINGS BROKEN IN NORTH CROATIA

CAKOVEC, April 6 (Hina) - Of 38 persons suspected of smuggling illegal migrants, 34 were taken to the county court in Varazdin (northern Croatia) on Friday, police reported at a special news conference in the town of Cakovec. Those 34 persons will be taken in custody. Three of those 38 suspects are on the run, while one smuggler is already in jail. State prosecutor Antun Kvakan in Cakovec said the suspects are charged with conspiracy to commit the criminal act of illegal transportation of foreigners over the border. During the operation of breaking this chain of smugglers, the police seized 45 mobile phones, radio transceivers, five personal computers, 18 personal cars, various kinds of arms and ammunition, drugs, cigarettes and different documents believed to be forged. The police assessed that this group smuggled at least 900 foreigners from Croatia to Slovenia in 2000 and 2001 year. Thus they gained 790,00

A high-ranking official in the Croatian police, Dragutin Cestar, has said the illegal migrations are a security issue. Zagreb expects from the Stability Pact for South-Eastern Europe to offer not only expert but also technical assistance in the control and protection of the state border-line.
