SARAJEVO, March 28 (Hina) - ICTY Chief Prosecutor Carla del Ponte on
Wednesday confirmed announcements that new indictments would be
issued against persons accountable for the violation of the
international humanitarian law and the law of war in the area of the
former Yugoslavia.
At a news conference she held in Sarajevo at the end of her three-
day-long visit to Bosnia-Herzegovina, del Ponte said new
indictments could be expected in the coming weeks and months.
Investigations we are carrying out are directed at all sides and
persons involved in war crimes. I can say that indictments will be
issued against Bosniaks (Moslems) as well involved in such
developments, said the chief prosecutor of the International
Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY).
She declined to give more explanations on the current probes.
During the conference del Ponte reiterated that she was very her
dissatisfied with the rhythms of the apprehension of ICTY indictees
so far.
In this context she pointed to the notorious war-time Bosnian Serb
leader Radovan Karadzic, and criticised the NATO-Stabilisation
Force (SFOR), deployed in Bosnia, over their failure to nab him.
According to what they have told me, it seems that nobody knows
Karadzic's whereabouts. If they do not know where he is after five
years, it is then logical that they do not search for him, del Ponte
asserted.
She, however, expressed confidence that the things would soon be
changed adding that such indications were given during her talks
with SFOR officials.
Commenting on the case of Slobodan Milosevic, a former Yugoslav
President, del Ponte said he must immediately be extradited to The
Hague. She added that his indictment would be amended and enlarged
by charges on Milosevic's liability for war crimes perpetrated in
Croatia and Bosnia. So far he is indicted of war crimes in Kosovo.
Carla del Ponte expressed the satisfaction with the current
cooperation with authorities of countries in the region, including
Belgrade that showed readiness to hand over suspects who are on the
Yugoslav territory.
