PRAGUE, March 6 (Hina) - There are no open political issues in the
relations between Croatia and the Czech Republic, and the
cooperation between the two countries is on the ascending line,
however, there is room for the strengthening of the two countries'
economic cooperation, the Croatian and Czech presidents, Stipe
Mesic and Vatslav Havel, told a joint news conference in Prague on
Tuesday.
We want to increase our economic cooperation. Numerous tourists
from the Czech Republic chose Croatia as their tourist destination,
said the Croatian President.
President Havel stressed that cooperation between the two
countries was expanding, adding that an agreement on international
road transit, signed earlier today, was the 15th agreement Croatia
and the Czech Republic signed so far. According to the Czech
President, an agreement on cultural cooperation should be signed in
the near future, while a free trade agreement is expected to be
signed this spring.
Mesic said Croatia could benefit from the experience of the Czech
Republic in Euro-Atlantic integration, considering that the Czech
Republic joined NATO over two years ago. The Croatian President
reminded that Croatia started negotiations with the European Union
on a Stabilisation and Association Agreement after the Zagreb
Summit.
According to Havel, relations between the two countries fell behind
during the Tudjman era, but have picked up over the last year.
The policy of the new Croatian President and government is very
progressive, pro-European and enjoys our support, the Czech
President said and welcomed Croatia's joining the Partnership for
Peace Programme and negotiations on the Stabilisation and
Association Agreement.
During the talks, the two presidents also discussed the situation
in Southeast Europe.
According to Havel, Croatia and the Czech Republic share almost the
same standpoints on the situation in the region.
The standpoint of the Czech Republic is that the Federal Republic of
Yugoslavia should be preserved to include Serbia, Montenegro and
Kosovo, however, a clear constitutional and legal position of each
should be defined.
