ZAGREB, Feb 20 (Hina) - The trade union of mine removal experts on Tuesday afternoon refuted allegation of employers in the humanitarian demining who claimed that only 34 percent of workers took part in a strike, which started
yesterday, and that the de-mining ceased only on 15 percent of the sites which were being cleaned of mines. According to the data gathered by 01.00 pm Tuesday, 80 percent of mine removal experts were on strike and they discontinued their activities on 83 percent of the sites, the union stated. ZAGREB, Feb 20 (Hina) - The trade union of mine removal experts on
Tuesday afternoon refuted allegation of employers in the
humanitarian demining who claimed that only 34 percent of workers
took part in a strike, which started yesterday, and that the de-
mining ceased only on 15 percent of the sites which were being
cleaned of mines.
According to the data gathered by 01.00 pm Tuesday, 80 percent of
mine removal experts were on strike and they discontinued their
activities on 83 percent of the sites, the union stated.
The strikers began the stoppage on Monday after employers refused
their request for an increase of their salaries. Mine removal
exporters insisted that their monthly wages be three times higher
than the average salary in Croatia. Thus their salary will rise from
the current amount between 5,600 and 7,500 to about 10,000 kuna
(1,190 US dollars).
Owing to this industrial action, Prefect Petar Cobankovic of
Vukovar-Sirmium County, one of the worst mine-infested areas,
asked for an urgent meeting with Drazen Budisa, the chairman of the
council of the Croatian De-Mining Centre, and with Damir Gorseta
the head of the Centre.
