ZAGREB, Feb 13 (Hina) - One of Croatia's best-known tycoons Josip
Gucic on Tuesday dismissed accusations charging him with causing
financial damage to his company NIK, saying none of his companies
had ever made any illegal gains.
It took Gucic two and a half hours to present to Zagreb County Court
investigating judge Boris Ivancic his defence, which started in
late January, when after eight months Gucic turned himself in to
Croatia's judicial bodies, which had issued international arrest
warrants for him and his son Zvonimir.
Gucic's attorney Snjezana Gasic told reporters Gucic's alleged
willingness to testify against former state officials and about
their involvement in white-collar crime was not mentioned at the
hearing. There was also no mention about the way Gucic surrendered,
she said. Namely, the arrival of Josip and Zvonimir Gucic in Zagreb
was the result of an agreement between the Croatian Interior
Ministry and Intelligence Service (HIS).
Detention for the Gucics expires late this month, by which time
financial and accounting experts are to complete their work, the
result of which, Gasic said, will determine if they will have to
remain in custody. Due to problems with diabetes, Josip Gucic is at
the Zagreb prison infirmary while his son is at the Zagreb County
Prison.
