AMNESTY INT. CROATIA ADVOCATES RATIFYING INT. CRIMINAL COURT STATUTE

ZAGREB, Jan 27 (Hina) - Amnesty International Croatia (AIH) welcomes the forming of a task force in charge of preparing the ratification of the statute of the International Criminal Court which Croatia signed in October 1998. The statute was adopted by 120 states in Rome in July 1998. Seven states voted against, while 21 were abstained. For the Court to become operational, 60 states have to ratify its statute. To date, 139 states have signed, but only 27 ratified the statute. The Croatian Justice Ministry set up a commission to prepare the ratification of the statute later last year. AIH reminds Croatia played a "constructive and encouraging role" at the 1998 Rome conference, but that very little has been done since. AIH expects authorities in Croatia, and in other states as well, to ratify the statute as soon as possible, adjust national legislation with the statute, and pass laws which wil
