The decision on the reduction of military conscription from ten to six months or civil conscription from 15 to eight months was explained by Defence Minister Jozo Rados. ZAGREB, Jan 19 (Hina) - The Croatian Parliament Committee for
Internal Affairs and National Security on Friday adopted bills on
defence and on the prevention of narcotics usage, as well as
amendments to the law on armament and a decision on the reduction of
military conscription.
The decision on the reduction of military conscription from ten to
six months or civil conscription from 15 to eight months was
explained by Defence Minister Jozo Rados.
The implementation of this decision will save some 40 million kuna
next year, he said.
In line with the decision, military conscription of Croatia has
become one of the shortest in Europe, Rados said.
The Defence Ministry is also contemplating a complete rescinding of
military conscription, giving place to reserve forces, Rados
explained.
Due to the short term of military service, many future conscripts
could be compelled to refuse serving the military under arms, which
could lead to a significant reduction of armed forces, and
ultimately to a risk to national security, Rados said.
