BELGRADE, Jan 19 (Hina) - Croats in Yugoslavia need self-government in issues important for the preservation and nurturing of their identity, as well as a "direct parliamentary mandate" and proportional representation in the
administration, a Yugoslav Croat official said on Friday. The president of the Democratic Alliance of Croats in Vojvodina, Bela Tonkovic, requested the recognition of the national minority status to Croats in Yugoslavia. Speaking to Novi Sad's Gradjanski list newspaper, he reminded that Croats in Serbia forwarded to the Serb parliament a request for cultural autonomy way back on 31 May 1991. A response has not arrived yet. "If Yugoslavia's new authorities want its integration into Europe, they will have to meet certain demands which are also made in connection with the protection of national minorities," Tonkovic said.(hina) ha sb
