OSIJEK, Jan 17 (Hina) - Osijek-Baranja County police on Wednesday stated that the use of fire-arms in yesterday's operation against a notorious criminal in eastern Croatia, Zlatan Kordej alias Caruga, was justified and based on law.
On Tuesday, local police was combing the residential area of Cepin, outside Osijek, searching for Caruga, who fled the prison in Pula (Istria) in April 2000. When police officers came near Caruga, he drew a gun. One of policemen reacted promptly and fired two bullets from his revolver, killing the fugitive. According to the police statement, the Interior Ministry's internal control department conducted an investigation in the case and established that the use of the fire-arms by the policeman was "justified and necessary" for answering to Caruga's direct armed assault against police.(hina) sb ms
