ZADAR, Jan 16 (Hina) - The residents of Croatian islands established a non-party association called the Croatian Island Assembly (HOS) at a meeting in Zadar on Tuesday. The purpose of the association is to accelerate the resolution of
problems plaguing Croatian islands. Zlatko Soric from the island of Iz, who initiated the establishment of the association, was elected Assembly president. During a debate, more than 130 representatives from 31 islands discussed numerous problems which they said the state administration was to slow in dealing with. Those problems include poor links with the mainland, lack of an employment programme and loans for entrepreneurs, poor water supply systems, destruction of environment and a too big number of small cadastral plots. A representative of the Ministry of Public Works, Reconstruction and Construction said the ministry would grant some US$ 3,700 for the association to start

Attending today's meeting also representatives of political
parties from Zadar, parliamentary deputies, municipal officials
and other guests.
