ZAGREB, Dec 21 (Hina) - On behalf of the Sabor and on his own behalf, Croatian Parliament President Zlatko Tomcic on Saturday forwarded a message with best wishes for Christmas and the new year. #L# In the message Tomcic recalled the time when 12 years ago Croatia's parliament promulgated the "Christmas Constitution", the first democratic constitution in a free and sovereign Croatia. The period of 12 years was marked by the difficult struggle for independence, the country's recognition and promotion abroad, and by its not easier path towards the transformation into a truly democracy, Tomcic wrote. "The objectives which the Republic of Croatia determined as its priorities in foreign policy - the entry to the European Union and NATO - have been the same since the very beginning of the country's independence, but at the moment they are becoming more and more important thanks to the intensive activities aimed at their accomplishment," he added. The broad national consensus on the matter has recently been confirmed in the parliament which adopted a resolution on the country's bids to join the EU, Sabor Speaker said adding that "there is no doubt that the Croatia is on the path for which a great majority of its citizens have opted." "It is beyond any doubt that the speed in the accomplishment of desirable goals will, to a significant extent, depend on the speed in the implementation of all reforms and measures aimed at the strengthening of democratic processes," Tomcic said. This in particular refers to the removal of consequences of the war, the strengthening of the market economy but also to measures which should show social sensitiveness towards those affected by market principles, he said. Tomcic pointed to the importance of reaching the microeconomic stability through cuts in the unemployment rates, i.e. stronger investment cycles and the creation of more jobs as basic elements for ensuring better standard of all citizens.
