ZAGREB, Dec 12 (Hina) - The Croatian Helsinki Committee's (HHO)
Media Council on Thursday requested that the submission of
applications for a concession for the Croatian Television's third
channel be cancelled. #L#
The HHO said the decision was prompted by concern that "the high
concentration of ownership and media power in the press might spill
to the electronic media as well".
Under the existing law on telecommunications, the owner of a radio
station cannot apply for a TV concession, but a newspaper company
can.
The HHO therefore fears that the third channel might be privatised
by one of Croatian media magnates and warns that "the concentration
of publishing power in the Croatian press is already very high" and
that it jeopardises media pluralism.
