The two-day seminar, whose purpose is to provide insight into the
reasons for the limited results of Croatian historiography,
started at Zagreb's Journalists' House on Thursday. The event was
organised by the social sciences institute "Ivo Pilar".
The most influential but also the most immoral social activity,
politics, has placed major challenges before historiography in all
systems, Jurcevic said, noting that the former Yugoslav system
caused the discontinuation of historiography development in
Croatia.
Due to repression, many historians studied less sensitive topics
and older historical periods or created a meta-language, Jurcevic
said.
He believes that the current situation in Croatia reflects "a state
of chaos of inherited identities", with every more influential
political party promoting its demands, to which he says historians
succumb. Over the past years, discussions among historians have
been reduced to political arguments, he said.
Agneza Szabo of the Zagreb City Museum spoke about the influence of
ideologies on the terminology in scientific works and school books.
Szabo believes that after the materialist and Marxist approach to
history, historiography today is threatened by globalisation
pressures.
The seminar is part of the project "Annales Pilar", a series of
annual seminars which deal with current topics.
