ZAGREB, Dec 3 (Hina) - Supreme Court president Ivica Crnic on
Tuesday apologised for and explained his yesterday's statement
that "neither the reign of the Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) nor
that of the Social democratic Party (SDP) are responsible for the
situation in the judiciary." #L#
In a statement, Crnic explains that he "did not want to relieve
anybody of responsibility for the situation in the judiciary
because it is clear that the conduct of parties in power does indeed
reflect on a better or worse position of the judiciary."
Crnic said he wished to stress that dealing with the past would not
significantly contribute to improving the situation, and that the
incumbent government did not only answer for its actions towards
the judiciary, since the "debts" made by previous governments,
including the HDZ, always came to the current government to pay,
said Crnic.
He called on the incumbent government to "help a more successful
functioning of the judiciary with concrete acts."
