Djukanovic resigned in line with a proposal by the head committee of
the Democratic Party of Socialists that he be entrusted with
forming the new government.
Under the Montenegrin Constitution, parliament president
Vujanovic will act as head of state until a new one is elected.
Speaking to reporters, Djukanovic said he was confident Montenegro
was a stable state developing towards European integration.
"We acknowledged the reality of the political situation and adopted
the Belgrade Agreement on March 14. It represents the common
denominator of the various interests of all the participants in the
negotiating process and the measure of a possible compromise in the
given moment," Djukanovic told the press.
He said the adoption of a constitutional charter on the new
federation of Serbia and Montenegro had been prevented by
structures from Montenegro and Belgrade in bids to keep their
privileges in current federal bodies.
Djukanovic confirmed the European Union and other international
organisations had requested that the charter be adopted as soon as
possible.
