Several hundred supporters of Slobodan Milosevic gathered in
downtown Belgrade in response to the UN Secretary-General's visit.
They headed towards New Belgrade and the Federation Palace where
Annan attended talks with state leaders. According to the
organisers, the protesters will try to hand Annan a demand to have
Milosevic released from custody and to be treated in Yugoslavia.
On the eve of a meeting between Annan and ICTY Chief Prosecutor
Carla Del Ponte in Belgrade on Wednesday, the downtown Belgrade,
particularly buildings around the devastated Army headquarters,
were covered in posters and photographs of Veselin Sljivancanin,
accused of war crimes in Vukovar in 1991. The posters state, "We
Will Not Hand Over Veselin Sljivancanin. We Will Defend Him To The
Last. He Did His Duty As A Soldier. There Is No Retreat, There Is No
Surrender". The posters are signed by the "Committee For The
Defence of Veselin Sljivancanin.
