A recent inspection in a Bosnian Serb air base in Zaluzane near
Banja Luka showed the Republika Srpska army has seven combat
helicopters more than allowed by a regional armament control
agreement, SFOR spokesman Yvens Vanier said in Sarajevo on
Tuesday.
Even though the Gazelle-type aircraft bear hospital emblems, it has
been established they may be adapted for fighting tasks and that, in
effect, they are not fully adjusted for the transport of the
wounded. Vanier said these doubts had to be clarified in order to
ensure full compliance with international agreements.
The Bosnian Serb army's acting chief-of-staff, General Momir Zec,
has said there is nothing illegal with the helicopters, and that all
equipment the SFOR finds contrary to regulations will be removed.
