ZAGREB, Nov 8 (Hina) - The Croatian Physicians' Union's head
committee on Friday set up a committee to prepare a general strike
unless the government met the Union's demand for higher salaries
for physicians. #L#
The Union demands that a general practitioner's salary should
amount to two average Croatian salaries, i.e. 7,000 kuna (EUR933),
and the salary of specialists to 9,000 kuna (EUR1,200).
If an agreement on the demands cannot be reached with the
government, more than 10,000 physicians and dentists will go on
strike.
Health Minister Andro Vlahusic, who recently said physicians'
salaries would rise by 10-15 percent next year, dismissed the
Union's demands as unrealistic.
"The government agrees that physicians' salaries should be raised,
but a 45-percent increase is out of the question, not even in any
public service," Vlahusic said.
