Among other things, the parliament adopted changes to the law on the
sanitary control of foodstuffs, which introduce stricter penalties
for the production and distribution of harmful foodstuffs.
The changes also improve the work of sanitary and veterinary
inspections, increase fines for white-collar offences, and provide
for the cancellation of work permits for those who produce or
distribute foodstuffs that do not meet sanitary standards.
The parliament adopted a bill on travel documents under which the
citizen's identification number will no longer be entered in the
passport.
The parliament unanimously adopted several protocols to the
Convention on the Protection of Human Rights and Basic Freedoms
relating to the cancellation of the death penalty, prevention of
organised transborder crime and human smuggling.
It also adopted a set of protocols which adjust trade aspects of the
Agreement on Stabilisation and Association with the European
Union.
The protocols relate to favourable wine import-export quotas,
according to which Croatia would be able to export 45,000 and import
8,000 hectolitres of wine from the EU.
The parliament is currently debating a report on the national drug
abuse prevention strategy in 2001/2002.
