"This was a group of professional assassins who were not motivated
by ideology or politics. Its main objective was toppling the
government and establishing authorities in Serbia that would
tolerate crime and avoid conflicts with the most notorious
representatives of organised crime," Djindjic said at a press
conference, claiming there were indications that such activities
were not launched only in Serbia, but also from Sarajevo, Banja
Luka, Montenegro, and according to some sources, from Croatia.
The arrest of the group is only the tip of the iceberg, Djindjic
said, adding that he assumed some of its members were involved in
numerous unsolved murders which happened in Serbia in the past ten
years.
Between Sunday and Tuesday Belgrade police arrested a group of 16
people who are claimed to have planned a series of assassinations of
prominent figures in Serbia, with the aim of destabilising the
country and causing chaos. Among reported potential victims were
Yugoslav Deputy Prime Minister Miroslav Labus, the head of the DOS
ruling coalition's bench in the Serbian parliament, Cedo
Jovanovic, Serb Radical Party leader Vojislav Seselj, and a former
head of the Serbian State Intelligence Service, Jovica Stanisic.
