CAVTAT, Oct 29 (Hina) - The Croatian economy has the strength to
become a leader in the region because it started transition
processes earlier than other countries in the region and is not
lagging behind countries which are now joining the European Union,
said a Croatian vice-premier, Slavko Linic. #L#
Linic said this in talks with reporters at the second regional
financial and investment conference of Southeast European
countries which began in Cavtat on Tuesday. The conference, which
will last two days, was organised by a British business magazine,
Euromoney.
The conference focusing on integrating the economies of South-
eastern European countries into global economic trends has
gathered some 500 participants from 33 countries. A number of
seminars, round tables and workshops will address the fight against
corruption, the development of the capital market, economic
integration processes and other subjects.
In bids to create room for economic development, Croatia has to date
signed 30 free trade agreements. Linic announced that negotiations
on such an agreement with Yugoslavia should be completed by the end
of this year.
Negotiations on free trade do not make sense if there are
restrictions to the movement of business people, so a free trade
agreement should bring down some political barriers, concretely,
change the current visa regime between Croatia and Yugoslavia, the
vice-premier said.
