Pasalic, a former senior official with the strongest opposition
party, the Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ), established the
Croatian Bloc on 14 September 2001, having been ousted from the
HDZ.
Pasalic said today his programme followed the vision of a modern
Croatia and advocated tolerance inside and outside the party. One
of the goals is the protection of Homeland War values, which Pasalic
said was essential for both Croatia's past and its future.
Pasalic advocated improving ties between Croats at home and
abroad.
Speaking of what had motivated him to form the Croatian Bloc, he
said that the 3 January 2000 elections had given Croatia an
incompetent government whose alternative the HDZ was incapable of
being due to discord and lack of unity within its ranks.
"Tudjmanism" is the soul of the Croatian Bloc, Pasalic stated,
accusing the incumbent HDZ leadership of having abandoned the
policy of HDZ founder and former Croatian President Franjo Tudjman
in an effort to score points with the international community.
The Croatian Bloc convention is attended by representatives of all
opposition parties bar the HDZ or any of the ruling coalition's
parties.
There are about 1,900 envoys from Croatia and abroad in attendance,
as well as some 100 guests.
The envoys will elect the party's new president and bodies, adopt a
rule book, statute, and programme, as well as a declaration on the
current economic and political situation in Croatia.
