The visit to the economic centre of China and Asia is taking place at
the end of Tomcic's visit to China, during which he and his
associates also visited Shanghai and Beijing.
Croatia and China have very good political relations but their
economic cooperation is not as good. There is almost no cooperation
with Hong Kong, a former British colony over which China re-
established its authority in 1997.
During his meeting with Donald Tsang, Hong Kong's Vice-Premier, and
the head of the Judicial Council, Rita Fan Hsu Lai Tai, Tomcic said
the two sides should start making joint investments, particularly
in tourism.
His hosts said that business people in Hong Kong required
comfortable travel, information on business opportunities, and a
good business environment and respect for national legislation.
They also told the Croatian official that business people from Hong
Kong needed entry visas for Croatia, which they said did not
facilitate economic cooperation.
Tomcic answered that Croatia would do everything to solve that
problem.
The Hong Kong officials also acquainted Tomcic with the current
situation in Hong Kong, which has to adapt to a new business
environment and growing unemployment and recession.
Tomcic and his associates will return to Croatia late this
evening.
