Valentic spoke at the end of the Zagreb part of a Croatian-Hungarian
conference tackling relations between the two countries in the
1102-1918 period. The event has been staged to mark the 900th
anniversary of Hungarian King Koloman's coronation as the first
Croatian-Hungarian King. The conference began in Zagreb yesterday
and continues in Biograd and Zadar.
The conference is the result of three years of work and preparations
between the Croatian History Institute and the Hungarian Science
Academy, said Valentic.
As for the "Picture of the Neighbour" project, he explained that
scholars should examine history textbooks to see the picture
Croatia offers its students of Hungarians, and vice-versa.
Valentic added the European Union expected each of its future
members to implement the project before admission.
Cooperation may be resumed in other projects as well, for example in
studying roads between Pannonia and the Adriatic, especially
today, when the old "Via cardinalia" road, which 2000 years ago
connected Salona, today's Split, and Aquincum, today's Budapest,
is being reconstructed with the greatest effort, said Valentic.
That is a fascinating meeting with history, he added.
Croatian and Hungarian scholars are also considering the project
"Central Europe - The Joint Space Between Croats and Hungarians",
said Valentic, adding that for the two peoples central Europe was
not merely a large area on Europe's map, but a reminder of the
millennium of their spiritual ties and fusion.
