ZAGREB, Oct 6 (Hina) - Croatian President Stjepan Mesic on Sunday
forwarded a message to all Croatian citizens with his best wishes on
the occasion of Independence Day, October 8. #L#
"On Independence Day we remember the fateful times of more than a
decade ago, when Croatia realised that it could no longer stay in
the former state community and, with a decision of the Croatian
Sabor, severed state and legal relations with the Socialist Federal
Republic of Yugoslavia.
"This was followed by an act of aggression against Croatia, an
attempt to fight back the determination of our citizens to live an
independent and free life. It was with great sacrifice, the courage
of soldiers, and endurance of all citizens that our country
succeeded in defending itself and establishing sovereignty and the
rule of law on its entire territory, thus creating conditions for
development, reads the message.
"We have an independent state and nothing can jeopardise it any
more. The Republic of Croatia today is a recognised and respected
partner, open to cooperation and ready to integrate in united
Europe.
"Today, the Republic of Croatia faces the task of building its
economy and creating conditions for development, with every
citizen, regardless of nationality, religion, sex or view of life,
being able to live a life worthy of free men and fully equal to all
other citizens," reads President Mesic's message.
