The leaders of San Marino invited Mesic to visit their country as
soon as possible.
San Marino, which is located in the Apennine mountains in central
Italy, is the third smallest country in Europe, following the
Vatican and Monaco, and has 27,336 citizens. The state is headed by
two captains regents who are elected by parliament for six months.
The armed forces have less than 100 soldiers and officers.
The guests will visit the island of Rab on Saturday. According to
legend, San Marino was founded in the fourth century by a stone-
mason Marin from this Croatian island.
The San Marino delegation also held talks with parliamentary vice-
president Zdravko Tomac. He informed them about the current
political situation in Croatia in connection with the indictment
against General Janko Bobetko, who was a commander of the Croatian
army during the war, which, Tomac said, could have huge
consequences for Croatia's stability and future.
San Marino was the second country in the world to recognise
Croatia's independence in January 1992.
