The acquisitions realised by Croatian companies in the first six
months of 2002 amounted to US$38.8 million. The majority of these
investments was made in the production of cellulose (69.9
percent).
In the first two quarters of 2002, Croatian companies invested the
most in Slovenia, which accounts for 46.7 percent of all direct
investments.
The principle investor was Belisce, Croatia's paper and packing
material manufacturer, bought by Slovenia's Valkarton in the first
half of this year.
In this year's first half, acquisitions by Croatian companies were
oriented towards the pharmaceutical industry (13.4 percent) and
holding companies (10.5 percent). Apart from Slovenia, Croatian
companies also invested in Bosnia-Herzegovina (28.6 percent),
Switzerland (23.2 percent) and India (8.7 percent).
The latest central bank statistics on foreign investments over the
last nine and a half years continue to indicate that the production
of pharmaceutical products (41.9 percent) and maritime and coastal
transport (11.9 percent) account for most foreign acquisitions by
Croatian companies.
Over the last nine and a half years, Croatian companies invested the
most in Poland, namely more than one third of direct investments
(33.6 percent). Bosnia-Herzegovina follows with 28.2 percent and
Slovenia with 12.1 percent.
Croatian companies also invested in the Netherlands (8.2 percent),
Switzerland (4.3 percent), Macedonia (3.5 percent), Marshall
Islands (four percent), Antigua (3.2 percent) and Panama (2.7
percent).
