Sarajevo's daily "Oslobodjenje" on Saturday ran an article about a
report recently compiled by Bosnia-Herzegovina's parliamentary
commission for human rights and refugees. The daily said that in the
past 30 days there were several registered cases of conversion to
Islam and some of 'converts' underwent surgeries.
The convicts of Croat origin, who are serving their sentences in the
jail in Zenica (central Bosnia) are exposed to pressure to abandon
their Catholic faith and convert to Islam, the daily wrote.
"The HDZ most harshly condemns the conduct of prison officials and
requests an urgent investigation to establish the responsibility
of the prison warden and the federal justice minister, Zvonko
Mijan," the Bosnian HDZ said in a statement on Sunday.
A member of the parliamentary commission, who spoke on condition of
anonymity, has said there are reasons for suspicion in whether
prisoners converted of their own accord.
The commission will submit its report about the situation in
prisons to the Bosnian state parliament next week.
