PARLIAMENTARY ELECTIONS START IN MACEDONIA

SKOPJE, Sept 15 (Hina) - Macedonians on Sunday went to the polls for parliamentary elections. Until noon, the voting proceeded in a fair and peaceful atmosphere, and only minor technical problems were reported from some polling stations in western Macedonia.

Until noon, the voting proceeded in a fair and peaceful atmosphere, and only minor technical problems were reported from some polling stations in western Macedonia. #L# According to the national television, 13 percent out of a total of 1,664,000 eligible voters cast their ballots until 10 a.m. Over four thousand monitors are observing the polls. There are one thousand representatives of international organisations who are monitoring the voting in north-western parts of the country. The elections, which have the proportional representation system, have drawn 53 political parties and five independent candidates. The parties which stand best chances are the VMRO-DPMNE party of Prime Minister Ljubco Georgievski, moderate Social Democratic Union of a former prime minister, Branko Crvenkovski, and two parties of ethnic Albanians: the Democratic Party of Albanians and the recently-established the Democratic Union of the commander of the disbanded National Liberation Army, Ali Ahmeti.
