"President Stjepan Mesic is cited as the first witness in the part
of the Slobodan Milosevic trial pertaining to crimes committed in
Croatia," read a statement issued from Mesic's office which said
that this part of the trial was scheduled for early October.
On Tuesday, Mesic said he would testify about circumstances from
the time when he was a member and the president of the then Yugoslav
collective presidency (prior to the collapse of the Socialist
Federal Republic of Yugoslavia) and about his knowledge of
Milosevic's intention of creating a Greater Serbia.
The call was forwarded through the Croatian government's office in
charge of cooperation with the Hague-based tribunal (ICTY).
Milosevic is indicted for crimes against humanity in Kosovo.
The Bosnian section of the indictment charges him with genocide,
and the Croatian section with crimes against humanity, serious
breaches of the Geneva conventions and violations of the law and
customs of war.
