About 60 persons were injured in conflicts between police and
protesters in Decani last month.
Steiner called on the population to be quicker in assuming
commitments and transferring authority from international to
Kosovo institutions. He said it was uncertain how long the UN
Mission in Kosovo (UNMIK) would stay in the province.
Steiner denied claims by some media that the UNMIK could stay in
Kosovo for another ten years.
After September 11, 2001, the international community has a
different approach and obligations in other countries as well,
Steiner said.
He said that the main problem was the economic situation and the
high unemployment rate.
During his visit to Decani, the UNMIK head also visited the Visoki
Decani Orthodox Monastery and held talks with Father Sava Janjic.
According to Steiner, the talks focused on the return of Serbs to
Kosovo.
There will be no mass return, but everyone who wishes to return can
do so, Steiner said. The return should be permanent and not
artificial and the UNMIK is constantly working on creating
conditions for their return, he added.
