Pancic said at a press conference in Erdut that beet sugar stocks
were sufficient for the whole shipment and that it was not true that
cane sugar had been used because of lack of beet sugar. He added that
the Osijek Sugar Refinery was continuing to operate normally but
that shipments were being double-checked.
The Croatian Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry reported two days
ago that sugar with an admixture of cane sugar had been exported to
Greece, which constituted a violation of the Agreement on
Stabilisation and Association between Croatia and the EU. This
resulted in the suspension of persons responsible for the incident.
Tests have shown that six out of 18 shipments of sugar from the
Osijek factory contained cane sugar admixtures.
