following a fire on Thursday at the Jakusevac waste plant. #L#
As a responsible and moral man, I offer my resignation because I
cannot neglect or deny my responsibility, Gazic told journalists at
the sight of the fire.
He claimed that the waste that had burnt was warehoused according to
regulation and was secured and that the fire was an accident.
According to Gazic, it was most probably caused by self-
inflammatory liquids, waste coloured paint and polishes that were
located in the warehouse in the near vicinity of burners.
Zagreb Mayor Vlasta Pavic said that she backed Gazic's decision and
before an investigation is completed she could not speak about her
political responsibility or of other members of the City Council.
The most important thing is that a larger catastrophe was prevented
and following the investigation we will know more, Pavic said.
The fire burst out at about 7.20 p.m. Thursday night and was
extinguished in the early hours of Friday. About 100 tonnes of waste
was burnt and initial estimates indicate damages of between 300 &
400 thousand euros.
