Main Prosecutor in the Milosevic trial Geoffrey Nice on Friday
informed the Trial Chamber that the Prosecution could end the
Kosovo part of the trial even before the deadline, should the issue
of the former Yugoslav President and witness in the trial, Zoran
Lilic, be solved before September.
The International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia
Trial Chamber on Thursday decided that the Kosovo trial must be
completed by September 13. The trial referring to Croatia and
Bosnia should start after a two-week break, namely on September 30,
the Trial Chamber decided.
Lilic was recently supposed to take the witness stand in the part of
the trial referring to Kosovo, but unless the issue of his being
exempt from the obligation of keeping state and military secrets is
not solved within the deadline, the Prosecution will examine him
during the Croatian and Bosnian part of the trial.
According to the Prosecution, Lilic should testify on the event in
Kosovo and Milosevic's role in the crimes committed in Croatia and
Bosnia.
After consulting with other members of the Trial Chamber, judge May
said the Croatian and Bosnian part of the trial would begin exactly
two weeks after the Kosovo part of the trial ends.
