Busek took part in a one-day regional conference of the gender
equality working group of the Stability Pact for Southeastern
Europe, which was held in Zagreb.
The sixth regional meeting gathered representatives of ten (10)
south-eastern European countries, some European Union members and
other participants in the Stability Pact.
Women in the region suffered much, due to the war and the
trafficking in human beings. That is why it is necessary to
stimulate legislators, politicians and the state administration to
invest more efforts as to reach the equality between men and women,
the Pact's official said at a news conference in the Croatian
capital.
The head of the gender equality working group, Sonja Lokar, told
reporters that the organisation of this conference in Zagreb was
the commendation of Croatia for what it had done in the field of the
gender equality.
The working group's task is to engage as more women as possible in
the political life as it is a key basis for achieving their equality
in society, she added.
Lokar said that in the last three years when the group had been
active, the share of female members of parliament in the countries
in the region had risen from seven to over 15 percent
In addition to this, capitals - Belgrade, Zagreb and Ljubljana -
have female mayors, she added.
