ZAGREB, July 10 (Hina) - The leaders of five regional parties that signed a declaration on organising Croatia into regions presented a proposal envisaging the division of the country into five regions at a press conference in the
parliament building on Wednesday.

The declaration on the starting points for the organisation of
regional self-government was signed by the Istrian Democratic
Assembly (IDS), the Primorje-Gorski Kotar Alliance (PGS), the
Slavonia-Baranja Croatian Party (SBHS), the Dalmatian Action (DA),
and the Action of Social Democrats of Croatia (ASH).
The party leaders claim that the current state and local
administration is not structured economically. They therefore
offer a new structure (including a map with the borders of the five
regions), which they claim would considerably reduce
administration costs.
They could not say how much money could be saved this way.
Damir Juric of the SBHS said that the state itself did not have data
on how much county, municipal, and town management cost.
Juric believes hundreds of millions of kuna are spent senselessly
because administration tasks are duplicated.
PGS president Nikola Ivanis dismissed claims that his party made
its support for the new government conditional on a ministerial
post.
