Asked about China's attitude toward Tibet, the 14th Dalai Lama
answered that Chinese policy still kept Tibet down, and it was
difficult to say when he would be able to come back.
The Dalai Lama, an advocate of the peaceful resolution of problems
and of dialogue, and the 1989 Nobel Peace Prize winner, has been
living in India since 1959 when he was forced into exile after the
Chinese military occupation of Tibet. Since 1960 he has resided in
Dharamsala, aptly known as "Little Lhasa", the seat of the Tibetan
Government-in-Exile.
At the news conference in Split he said the time was on the side of
Tibet.
The Dalai Lama added that his peace plan envisaged the
transformation of the entire Tibet in a peace zone, followed by fair
and sincere negotiations on the future status of that region and the
Tibetan-Chinese relations.
