MOSTAR, July 7 (Hina) - John Sylvester, the commander of the NATO-
led Stabilisation Force in Bosnia-Herzegovina (SFOR), on Saturday
urged the processing of all responsible for the illegal storage of
120 tonnes of mortar shells and three tonnes of gunpowder. #L#
The illegal arms depots in the cellars of three factories in eastern
Mostar were discovered two months ago.
For the international peacekeepers' commander it is inadmissible
that somebody can store over one hundred tonnes of explosive in the
centre of a town and jeopardise lives of citizens.
All responsible should be taken before the justice and they must
bear consequences, Commander Sylvester said on Saturday afternoon
after his meeting with Mostar Mayor Hamdija Jahic.
The discovered shells and other ammunition were manufactured
during 1995 and 1996 after the conclusion of the Dayton peace
accords. The weapons were ready for use.
The Mostar court has launched an investigation against nine Bosniak
(Moslem) officials, including an assistant to the defence minister
and heads of the military production in Bosnia.
The SFOR claims that another 4,000 120-millimetre mortar shells are
hidden in the Mostar area.
